Critical Care
Dr Sean Bennett - Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
I qualified from Birmingham in 1981 and started anaesthesia and critical care in 1984. Teaching jobs included Cambridge and Leeds plus working overseas. In Sweden I learnt transoesophageal echo and on my return to the UK started my own teaching course (1996) and a small group under ACTA (association cardiothoracic anaesthetists) which led to courses across the UK and in 2003 a UK accreditation in TOE under ACTA/BSE. In 2000 I took the American echo accreditation. Long-term involvement in cardiac echo and working on a mixed ICU meant that I’ve practiced ICU echo for many years.
Currently I’m spending a lot of time teaching ICU echo in centres around the UK and overseas. I teach ultrasound to groups of medical students and at all levels up to consultant. My other areas of interest are 3D echo specifically for cardiac surgery and invasive cardiology. Also brain oxygen monitoring during cardiac surgery. For the past 10 years I have been the network clinical lead for intensive care which involves me in ICU of all sizes.
