Chronic Pain Management

Dr Adrian Searle - Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal Derby Hospital

I am committed to personal and professional development - Medicine is truly a lifelong learning experience.

Over the last few years one of the big developments that I have led in the Midlands region is Ultrasound Guided regional Anaesthesia, a field in which I am recognised as a national expert, and have lectured internationally and across disciplines.

Outside of work I am a keen sportsman, having completed the London Marathon three times, and regularly play Racquetball and Cricket.

I have a long-term interest in Horology, and am a member of the British Horological Institute.

I am lead clinician for pain services within the Derby Hospitals, and module supervisor for upper limb regional anaesthesia. I have previously been Service Director for the Critical Care Directorate, and am lead clinician involved in planning a new hospital build.

I see a full spectrum of pain problems with particular interests in neuropathic pain, back and facial pain and complex regional pain syndromes, sometimes known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy and causalgia. I have a close working relationship with the orthopaedic and hand surgery units in Derby, who use my services to assist with complex neuropathic pain problems including peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries, and insertion of brachial plexus catheters to facilitate physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

I anaesthetise mainly for hand, ENT, and orthopaedic surgery, and specialise in regional anaesthesia. My particular interest is in brachial plexus anaesthesia and peripheral nerve blocks, and lecture at national meetings to anaesthetic, hand surgery, and accident and emergency audiences. I have pioneered the use of ultrasound in regional anaesthesia locally, and lecture on this topic internationally. I am module leader for regional anaesthesia training for trainees from the Nottingham and Leicester rotations.

I am also the specialist pain advisor to the cancer and MacMillan units in Derby, offering specialist pain advice and invasive techniques including neurolytic blocks for problematic cancer pain.
